Biofuel technology developer Solazyme Inc. raised $45.4 million in a third round of funding

Solazymelogo_2 Biofuel technology developer Solazyme Inc. raised $45.4 million in a third round of funding from new investors Braemar Energy Ventures of New York and Lightspeed Venture Partners of Menlo Park, California.

Previous investors Roda Group of Berkeley, Calif., and Harris & Harris Group of New York also participated.

Solazyme, based in San Francisco, is a synthetic biology company working in the algal biodiesel, industrial chemical, and specialty ingredient markets with a technology transforming algae into biofuel. It is planning to build a commercial production plant.

The company, which was founded in 2003, previously had secured about $8 million in equity, $5 million in debt financing and a $2 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
